Facade Product Development Award

“Product development" refers to the entire process of creating a new product, from the initial idea generation to the final launch in the market, including design, prototyping, testing, and refinement - McKinsey, from SKINS, April 2021

The Outstanding Facade Product Development Award recognizes the creation of a new facade product, component, or assembly that enhances facade and building performance, resilience, and sustainability, and is commercially viable. Submitters may include fabricators, manufacturers, material suppliers, or collaborations between these entities, which may involve outside design, engineering, and testing partners. The product can be applicable to any aspect of a facade project design and delivery process from concept development to installation, commissioning, and post-occupancy evaluation. The product development process must be documented from concept through design development, prototyping, testing, and product rollout. The new product should demonstrate some level of adoption with broader market potential.

Note: For product research and development projects that have not progressed to a market launch, review the Facade Research Award for suitability.

Submissions for the Facade Product Development category will be evaluated in the overarching context of their current and potential impact, as described below.

The hierarchy of consideration for the Facade Product Development Award will be:

  • 10% — Clarity (narrative and graphic representation)

  • 20% — Process: The attributes of the product development process from concept to roll out.

  • 50% — Market Impact: The extent to which the product demonstrates performance improvements that enhance the sustainability and resilience of facade systems, buildings, and urban habitat.

  • 20% — Market Potential: The extent to which the product demonstrates the potential for future performance improvements that enhance the sustainability and resilience of facade systems, buildings, and urban habitat.
